Joan Jocson-Singh is the Institute Librarian at the CalArts Library in Valencia, CA. She has previously worked as Head of Technical Services at Lehman College and as the Acquisitions Order Unit Librarian at Columbia University's Butler Library. She earned her BA in Art (Drawing) and Art History (Medieval Art and Architecture) at SUNY Albany, her Masters in Library Science and an Archives certificate at Pratt Institute, and a Masters in Anthropology from Hunter College, CUNY.

She has presented her thesis work, ‘Individual Thought Patterns: Women in NY’s Extreme Metal Music Scene’ at the 2014 Metal and Cultural Impact (MACI) conference in Dayton, Ohio, the Northeast Regional Popular Culture Association (PCA) conference in Providence, Rhode Island in 2014, and the 2016 Experience Museum Project (EMP) conference in Seattle, Washington. 

 Joan has also presented the study, “Snare Drum at My Womb: The Role of Rock and Heavy Metal Mothering”, with her colleague Julie Turley at the 2019 Modern Heavy Metal Conference in Helsinki and is closing up a recent ALA grant on Exploring Extreme Music and Marginalized Communities Bibliography with her colleague Junior Tidal at City Tech College in Brooklyn, NY.

 Joan’s research interests include DEI and Zines in Librarianship, Makerspaces, Fandoms, Women and Motherhood Studies, Sexuality Studies and Ethnomusicology. She is the author of the 2019 article, “Vigilante feminism as a form of musical protest in extreme metal music,” published by Intellect in Metal Music Studies.
